If you've started searching for "virtual audiology," you're probably looking at one of two things: a clinical workflow that uses tele-audiology to test patients remotely, or a business model that lets your practice offer audiology services without staffing or stocking a dispensary in-house. This guide covers both, then shows you how to figure out whether either fits your practice.

The two definitions of "virtual audiology"

The term gets used two different ways. They overlap but are not the same thing.

1. Virtual audiology as a clinical workflow (tele-audiology)

This is the narrower clinical definition. It refers to using video, remote testing booths, and connected audiometers to deliver audiologic services without an audiologist physically in the room. A patient sits in a quiet space, an audiometer is operated remotely, and an audiologist on the other end of the connection runs the assessment, reads the results, and counsels the patient — all in real time. Tele-audiology is most common in rural markets, in pediatric school-based programs, and in VA settings.

2. Virtual audiology as a business model (outsourced / MSO audiology)

This is what most ENT practice owners actually mean when they search "virtual audiology" in 2026. It's a model where an external organization — often called a management services organization (MSO) or an outsourced audiology partner — provides audiology staffing, hearing-aid procurement, dispensing, fitting, and follow-up care, while operating inside your ENT clinic, in your EHR, under your brand. The virtual part isn't about telehealth; it's about your practice offering audiology services without taking on the inventory, the staffing risk, or the manufacturer relationships in-house.

Why ENT practices are looking at virtual audiology right now

Three things have shifted in the audiology market over the last five years.

Practices that ran their own dispensary used to capture this demand profitably. Now, many of them look at the math and see compressed margins, hard staffing, and rising patient acquisition costs — and they ask whether someone else should do the dispensary while the practice focuses on ENT.

What virtual audiology is not

Where it starts: the patient screening

  1. How many unique adult patients are in your chart? Below ~5,000 unique adults the math is tighter. Above 10,000, the patient-capture upside is meaningful.
  2. What does your current dispensary contribute to net profit? If your dispensary nets less than ~$150K per year (after audiology salary, COGS, and overhead), a virtual partner almost certainly improves your net profit. If you're netting $300K+ on a fully optimized dispensary, the math gets more nuanced.
  3. How is your audiology staffing today? Single-AuD practices benefit most from outsourced coverage. Multi-AuD practices keep more upside in-house.
  4. How important is patient capture growth? If your chart contains untreated SNHL patients you're not reaching, that's the upside a virtual audiology partner unlocks the fastest.
  5. Are you comfortable with a long-term service relationship? Virtual audiology contracts are typically multi-year. Both sides need to invest in workflow integration.
